An acute anal fissure (“ChB 9n”) is a superficial break in the lining skin of the anal canal caused by e.g. a hard bowel movement. This can lead to development of a chronic anal fissure. A chronic ulcer tends to burrow into the internal sphincter muscle. This can lead to other complications such as an abscess or a fistula. The procedure is relatively minor and can be performed either by excising the ulcer with all scars or by making a nick in the sphincter muscle if the anus has lost elasticity.
