The informed consent leaflet “ChB 9k” provides information on the treatment of fistulas in the anal region. The anal glands drain into the anal crypts, or sinuses, located in the anal canal. In them, invading bacteria cause inflammation and abscesses which erupt into the anal canal and onto the body surface. This creates fistulas which are superficially situated below the skin and mucosa of the anus, grow between the sphincter muscles and can penetrate or enclose the muscles.
